Note : Speaking of French films by problematic directors, here's serial cradle robber and stylishness enthusiast Luc Besson's international breakthrough film, a slick, nihilistic actioner about an unwilling assassin redeemed by the power of love. Besson's been associated with a French cinema pseudo-movement of the 80s and 90s called Cinéma du look, and this is certainly a looker, with neon-drenched night scenes, sterile government interiors, lavish, color-popping Paris and Venice locations, and bright red splashes of blood. It stars Anne Parillaud in the title role, giving an amazingly unhinged and raw performance, as well as , Tchéky Karyo as her handler, Jean-Hugues Anglade, as the later love interest, Jean Reno in a ruthless assassin role that's clearly the template for Besson's later Leon, as well as Jeanne Moreau in a small role. Kinetic, exciting, and super stylish, there's never a boring moment, although the ending, or much of what comes before it, isn't exactly realistic.
Nikita is a young punk who's not interested in much beyond drugs and mayhem. After a robbery at a pharmacy owned by one of her friends goes wrong, leaving everyone else dead and her having murdered a cop in cold blood, she's sentenced to life in prison, but whisked away by men in white coats and injected with a sedative, after which she wakes up in a nondescript room. She's told she's officially dead, but can choose to get a second chance working for the government, or if not, she will be killed. Choosing life, she's trained in all sorts of useful skills, not the least murdering, and after a first mission, she's released in Paris as a sleeper agent. But a developing romance with a supermarket clerk threatens to interfere with her duties of murdering, so what will her heart choose?
Although I suspect the color grade here is a bit revisionist, the hyper-saturated, high contrast look suits the film really well. Grain is generally decently managed, there's good detail, and it's nice and clean. Sound tracks are similarly pleasant and dynamic. Too bad there's no commentary track or anything.
