Note : Umberto Lenzi's early gialli were notably sexual, especially for the period, and are pretty clear precursors to the sexy gialli of Sergio Martino. This is the first of them, and the first of Lenzi's four collaborations with American actress and Miss Florida Fruits and Vegetables 1949 Carroll Baker, who plays the lead. It's not the most complicated plot, but luckily for us, it's pretty sleazy and nasty, with lesbian sex, threesomes, incest, kidnapping, some light BDSM, a fair bit of nudity, the obligatory hippie party with psychedelic effects, and copious amounts of J&B and pills. The other main characters are played by Lou Castel and Colette Descombes, with support by Tino Carraro and Lilla Brignone.
Recently widowed socialite Catherine West moves to Italy to escape the press after the car accident death of her oil millionaire husband. Her laywer, Brian Sanders, has set her up in a lavish villa, and she soon meets Peter Donovan, a young American whose car breaks down nearby. He's soon staying with her, and they start sleeping together. After Catherine comes back from the US, having met with her husband's relatives, who believe she only married him for his money, she thinks someone has broken into the house, but her housekeeper attributes her fears to her abuse of alcohol and sleeping pills. When Peter comes to stay with her again, he invites along his sister Eva, and Catherine initially enjoys their company. When Catherine discovers Eva and Peter are sleeping together, and they tell her they're not blood relatives, the relationship develops into a series of threesomes, along with Eva and Peter constantly feeding Catherine drugs and alcohol. As Catherine slowly finds herself trapped in her own house and completely under the control of the intruders, her physical and mental state declining, she starts considering extreme measures, but all is not what it seems, and it's not clear who, if anyone, she can trust.
This is honestly a pretty poor transfer, fuzzy and with insipid color, although it comes alive a bit more when the psychedelic lighting effects kick in. The two mono tracks sound acceptable, and the commentary track with Alexandra Heller-Nicholas is good as usual. I had trouble converting the subtitles to VobSub, so I decided the easiest solution would be to OCR and correct them, enjoy a little blast from the HeVK past.
